Reading to children has many important benefits such as encouraging language development, developing skills crucial for academic success, and strengthening the parent and child bond. To encourage reading to young children, Coffey County Libraries invite our patrons to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. This is a fun and easy program that encourages early childhood literacy. Parents, Grandparents, Siblings, or Caregivers read books to children ages’ birth through five in order to reach the goal of 1,000 books before Kindergarten.

Along the path to 1,000 books, children earn incentives, and keep track of their progress online and with an owl moving up the tree at the library. In August, children who have completed their 1,000 books are celebrated with recognition at a county wide ceremony in their honor.  Reading 1,000 books sounds like quite a challenge, but can be completed more easily than you’d think. If a parent reads their child one book a day, they can reach 1,000 books in three years; reading three books a day will reach 1,000 in just under a year.

If you would like to enroll your child in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, you can visit the Youth Tab and then 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten app, and enroll at the bottom. Happy Reading!
