Book Review – Shadow and Bone

Shadow and Bone– by Leigh Bardugo

shadowandboneThe land of Ravka is bisected by an area of darkness known as the Shadow Fold.  Formed centuries ago by dark magic, the Shadow fold is populated by flesh eating monsters.  Alina Starkov, a young cartographer’s apprentice, is traveling with a caravan attempting to cross the Shadow Fold.  Within hours of entering the darkness, the caravan is attacked and Alina sees her best friend struck down.  In saving his life Alina demonstrates an incredible power that will change her life and the destiny of Ravka forever.  Shadow and Bone is one of the best novels I have read this year.  Alina is a great character; a girl who sees herself as nothing special, but turns out to have an immense and rare power.  I was captivated by the story, her relationships with the other compelling characters, and the detailed setting.  I would highly recommend Shadow and Bone to both adult and young adult readers.
