CLICK for Babies

It is a sad fact that every day across North America babies are shaken and abused by their caregivers due to frustration and ignorance. This abuse can be prevented through education about early infant crying (known as the PERIOD OF PURPLE CRYING).

CLICK for Babies is a North American initiative to help educate caregivers about normal infant crying, how to cope with crying, and the dangers of reacting to crying in frustration by shaking or harming an infant.

Coffey County Library fiber arts groups will participate in the CLICK FOR BABIES campaign by knitting and crocheting purple baby caps. If you would like to be a part of this campaign, groups will meet weekly in different branches throughout August to knit and chat for a good cause. Don’t know how to knit or crochet? Come to one of our groups and learn! You are also welcome to drop off your completed caps to any of the branches or donate clean, soft, purple yarn for our local artists to make the caps.

Step 1
Find a newborn size baby cap pattern or use one that we have. Please refrain from including “pom poms” that hang from strings or any type of strap to secure caps to baby’s heads. These pose a potential choking hazard.

Step 2
Purchase any shade of soft baby friendly purple yarn. Other colors of yarn can also be used in your cap, but be sure that the cap is at least 50% purple.

Step 3
Start knitting or crocheting as many caps as you would like. Infant heads come in a variety of sizes. As a general rule, caps should have a circumference of 7.5-13.5in (19-34cm) and a height of 3.5-6in (9-15cm).

Step 4
Send your completed caps to a Coffey County Library by October 1, 2013. Caps will be distributed to babies in November with the Period of PURPLE Crying program.
